Mississippi – 50 States – United States Geography / History 

Mississippi became the 20th State of the Union on December 10, 1817. Jackson is the capital of Mississippi, as well as the largest metropolitan area.

Mississippi is named for the giant Mississippi River, which forms the state’s western border.
