Lee Cronin is fascinated by the emergence of complexity in chemistry. He studies how simple mixtures give rise to incredibly complex molecules in an unpredictable way. Furthermore, he believes understanding this could shed light on how life can spontaneously arise from inert matter.
But for Cronin, life is too short to find the answers to life in the traditional manner. Unwilling to burden his team with the plethora of mundane experiments required to explore his ideas, he is building a growing team of robots to help them in the quest.
Chemistry World spoke to Lee, met members of his group and toured his labs to find out how he is digitising chemistry.
